New Museum Studio Visit with Carol Bove

Tuesday night, I visited the studio of Swiss-born American artist Carol Bove in Red Hook, Brooklyn organized by the New Museum. She is known best for her poetic assemblages that simplistically fuse hard modernist forms with organic natural materials. Bove is inspired by industrial landscapes making the location of her studio a perfect muse for her practice, being as Red Hook is a primarily industrial neighborhood.Bove salvages her modern materials like I-beams from neighborhood construction sites or salvage yards to repurpose in her work. She combines these industrial materials with found objects like peacock feathers or driftwood to create her idyllic and often geometric compositions. During her studio tour, Bove spoke to us about her artistic practice and allowed us to be hands on with her materials. We also viewed maquettes of sculptures for her European show with Italian architect Carlo Scarpa.
